All You Need to Know About Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary
Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is a peaceful and green place, located about 15 km from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. It is one of Indiaโs largest mangrove forests and is named after a small village called Coringa. The sanctuary was created in 1978 to protect the mangrove trees and the rich wildlife in this area. It covers an area of around 235 square kilometers and is filled with salt-tolerant trees that grow near sea water. These trees are home to many unique animals, birds, and fish that cannot live anywhere else.
The sanctuary is very popular among nature lovers and bird watchers. Every year, many tourists visit to see the backwaters, walk through the mangrove paths, and enjoy the calm and green surroundings. It is home to over 380 species of fish, 245 types of birds, and 35 different kinds of mangroves. Special animals like fishing cats, sea turtles, jackals, and estuarine crocodiles can also be seen here. Recently, a project started to track fishing cats by putting collars on them to study their movement and protect them better.
To make the place more tourist-friendly, new attractions were added such as a 3D theater, gaming zone, fish aquarium, documentary hall, canteen, cloakroom, and a nursery with bird cages. Thereโs also a Girijan Co-operative store for local products. The sanctuary is managed and protected by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department. It also supports the local economy by contributing over โน500 crores each year through tourism and nature-related services. Many people believe Coringa has the potential to become a world-famous eco-tourism site if given more care and support.
This mangrove forest also helps control floods and supports the natural balance of the environment. It is being considered for Ramsar site status, which means it could get international recognition as a wetland of great importance. With its clean air, rich biodiversity, and peaceful waters, Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is truly a natural treasure of Andhra Pradesh.
My Calm and Wild Day at Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, Kakinada
I had a free weekend and wanted to go somewhere peaceful, close to nature. A friend told me about Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary near Kakinada, so I decided to visit. I didnโt know much about the place, but now Iโm glad I went it was calm, green, and full of life.
The road to Coringa was smooth. As I got closer, I started to see more trees, birds, and small water canals. The weather was nice not too hot, not too cold. I could already feel the fresh air, far from the noise of the city.
When I entered the sanctuary, I saw long wooden bridges built above the water. These bridges go through thick mangrove forests. It felt like walking inside a green tunnel. The trees were tall, their roots standing in water, and the whole area looked like a green world I had never seen before.
There were signs along the path telling me about the trees, birds, and animals found here. I learned that Coringa is home to many birds, including kingfishers, herons, and sometimes even sea eagles!
As I walked deeper, I heard birds calling and leaves moving in the wind. It was so quiet and peaceful. I stopped many times just to listen. I even saw a few colorful birds sitting on branches and flying across the water.
Thereโs also a watchtower inside. I climbed up and looked around. From the top, I could see the forest and the Godavari river nearby. It was a great view.
On the sides of the bridge, I saw small crabs walking in the mud. Some ran and hid when they heard footsteps. The water was still and clean. Everything looked so alive, even the silence had its own beauty.
After walking around, I went to a small food stall near the entrance. They had hot tea and simple snacks like biscuits and pakoras. Sitting there, sipping tea, I felt relaxed and happy.
Coringa is not a noisy tourist place. Itโs calm, green, and full of nature. If you like walking, birds, and quiet places, you will love it. I didnโt want to leave.
