Must-Know Details About Kapila Theertham
Lord Shiva appeared here as a Swayambhu Lingam (a self-formed Shiva lingam).
These are the main events held at Kapila Theertham on Shivaratri:
- Ekadasa Rudrabhishekam (special Shiva worship)
- Rathotsavam (chariot procession)
- Snapana Tirumanjanam (holy bath for the deities)
- Nandi Vahanam (procession with Lord Shivaโs bull vehicle)
Inside Kapila Theertham, there is a holy temple called Nammalwar Alayam. It is a special place for Vaishnavites and is built to honor the saint Nammalwar. Nammalwar was one of the 12 great Tamil poet-saints known for their deep love and songs for Lord Vishnu.
Kapila Theertham looks stunning in the spring season when the waterfalls and springs are full of water.
AndhraNexus recently tweeted that the AP government is planning to declare Kapila Theertham as a biodiversity heritage site to protect its nature and greenery.
A Peaceful Day at Kapila Theertham: Where Waterfalls Meet Divine Blessings
I visited Kapila Theertham during a short trip to Tirupati, and the experience was very peaceful and special. The temple is not very far from the main town. As I entered the area, the first thing I noticed was the calm atmosphere and the sound of water flowing nearby. The temple is located at the foot of the Seshachalam hills, and there is a beautiful waterfall beside it. This waterfall is called Kapila Theertham Waterfall.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is said that sage Kapila did penance here. The place felt old and holy, as if it had many stories to tell. The temple is not too big, but it feels very powerful. Inside the temple, there is a Shiva Lingam, which people worship. Many people were praying silently or lighting lamps. The sound of the bells and the chants made the place feel very sacred.

The best part of my visit was standing near the waterfall. Since I went just after the rainy season, the water was flowing strongly. It was so fresh and cool, and the sound of the water was very soothing. I even dipped my feet in the water, and it felt refreshing. Some families were sitting nearby, and children were playing around. There was laughter and joy all around, but it still felt peaceful.
I also saw some monkeys in the area, jumping from tree to tree. They didnโt bother anyone, but it was fun to watch them. The trees around the temple were tall and green, which made the whole place look like a hidden spot in nature.
Another thing I liked was the big Nandi statue at the entrance. Nandi is the bull who is always with Lord Shiva. The statue was strong and silent, and I felt like it was protecting the temple. There were also some stone steps near the temple that led up to the hills. Some people were climbing those steps for a better view, but I stayed below and just enjoyed the cool breeze.
One of the most peaceful moments for me was just sitting quietly on a stone bench near the temple, listening to the water and watching the people come and go. Everyone seemed so calm and respectful. It made me feel like this was a place where people come not just to pray, but to find a moment of peace in their busy lives.
Before leaving, I walked around the temple once more. I took a few photos but also tried to just remember the place in my heart. On my way out, I bought a small prasad packet from the counter and gave a small donation to the temple.
Visiting Kapila Theertham reminded me that sometimes the simplest places leave the deepest mark on our hearts. It was not crowded like the Tirumala temple, but it felt just as divine. I would tell anyone visiting Tirupati not to miss this peaceful spot. Itโs a place where nature and spirituality come together in a very special way.
