Know About Narasimha Swamy Temple, Simhachalam
Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy is the main god of this temple. He is believed to be a combined form of Lord Vishnuโs Varaha (boar) and Narasimha (lion) avatars, along with Goddess Lakshmi. The temple was built to worship this powerful and kind form of God, to protect people and bless them with strength, peace, and health.
This temple is very special because the idol is covered with chandanam (sandalwood paste) throughout the year, and only once a year during the Chandanotsavam festival, the real form of the idol is shown. The Swarna Tulasi Dalarchana and Swarna Pushparchana are also special poojas offered by devotees. These poojas use golden tulasi leaves or flowers and are considered very sacred.
The temple is very popular, just after Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh. Every day, hundreds of devotees visit. During big festivals like Garuda Seva, Ekadasi Grama Tiruveedhi, and Pavitrotsavam, the number of visitors increases. A big celebration called Sri Swamivari Grama Tiruveedhi is held where the god is taken around the village in a decorated chariot. All parts of the temple are cleaned and decorated as per Agama Shastra during these events.
There is a holy pond called Varaha Pushkarini inside the temple, where many devotees take a bath before visiting the deity. Near the temple hill, on the Ghat road, there are some big stones and boulders, so devotees are asked to walk carefully, especially during rainy days. The Gangadhara stream flows nearby, adding to the calm and divine feeling of the place.
Inside the temple, all rituals are done properly and as per sacred rules. Special homas like Poornahuti are conducted during festivals like Pavitrotsavam. A cultural stage called Samskrutika Kala Vedika is also built near the entrance (Galigopuram), where singers and devotees perform bhajans and chant Simhadri Appanna’s name regularly.
This temple is indeed maintained under the Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department. While the Pusapati royal family of Vizianagaram (specifically Sri Ashok Gajapati Raju) serves as the hereditary chairman of the temple’s trust board, the overall administration, regulations, and funding are overseen by the Endowments Department of the Andhra Pradesh Government.
A Calm and Blessed Visit to Narasimha Swamy Temple, Simhachalam
I went to Simhachalam to visit the Narasimha Swamy Temple last weekend. It was something I had been planning for a while. I started early in the morning. The temple is on a hill, and I took my car. The road to the temple was okay. There were a few turns but not difficult to drive.
The temple itself is very old and has beautiful carvings on the walls. The architecture is traditional and grand. The gopuram (tower) of the temple is high and majestic. As I entered the temple premises, I saw devotees waiting in line for darshan. Even though there was a bit of crowd, everyone was patient and respectful. The temple volunteers were also guiding people properly, so everything was well-managed.
After the darshan, I walked around the temple. There is a pradakshina path, and I saw many people walking there. I sat down for a while near a shaded area. Then I went to the annadanam hall. They were serving free meals to everyone. I had rice, dal, a curry, and curd. It was simple food, but it tasted good.
I went to the prasadam counter and bought some laddus. Outside the temple, there were small shops selling photos of the deity, keychains, and a few toys. I bought a photo frame for home.
Before leaving, I just stood for a few minutes and looked at the temple again. I felt calm and thankful. The place had a strong spiritual feel. I didnโt rush. I took my time and left slowly.
As I walked back to my vehicle, I felt light and happy. The temple gave me a sense of calmness I was missing in my busy life. It wasnโt just a visit, it was an experience I would carry in my heart for a long time. I think anyone visiting Visakhapatnam should definitely go to Simhachalam and feel the divinity of Lord Narasimha Swamy for themselves.
